While studying for his final exams at university, 22-year-old James Murray Wells discovered that he needed to start wearing glasses.

Surprised at how a pair of “essentially some wire and two pieces of glass”, which costs only £7 to make was selling for more than £200, he decided to launch his own business and create a website selling spectacles directly to the consumer.

By using the remains of his student loan, he founded Prescription Eyewear Limited in 2004, trading as Glassed Direct and shaking the optical industry to its foundations.

For his services to Business in UK, James Murray Wells was appointed Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List 2015.
